19th December: Rise 2nd Birthday Review
For the Rise second birthday Fate Magazine were in attendance and have just published this review;

THE SOUND OF THE UNDERGROUND

RISE 2ND BIRTHDAY
SATURDAY 4TH NOVEMBER

By Aaron Eakin

Nestled deep down in the heart of our capital, the subterrane confines of the Basement Bar on Donegall Square East are home to Rise, the "Funk fuelled House" night conceived by Northern Ireland's very own Prog House prodigy Chris Cargo. Indeed, if it be said that this venue is at the heart of the city, then surely the sounds pumping out of Rise tonight can be likened to the city's heartbeat!

Upon being greeted by the courteous and mannerly bouncers, a warm, friendly, welcoming atmosphere is apparent before I have even completed my descent in to the venue. Once through the door I learn that these preconceptions are correct. I'm slap-bang in the middle of it all, as the intimate venue's layout dictates that guests immediately find themselves on the dancefloor upon arrival. This sets the precedent for the night really - It's a case of jumping straight in without a second to lose!

The packed out club is quite literally jumping to the funky, bouncy beats being laid down by an impressive roster of talent. No less than 8 DJs are spinning their wares tonight. Local lads Gavin Wilson, Jay Kay, Gary Dickenson, Conor Magavock, Greg Foster, Kevin McCool and Johnny McKay have all taken their turn on the ones and twos this evening. However all eyes and ears are on birthday boy Chris Cargo. The man himself is bouncing behind the decks, constantly twitching and fiddling with buttons and controls as he manipulates every move on the dancefloor. The constantly grinning Cargo knows this crowd like no other, as he steers them on a journey filled with his trademark sound.

Of course it wouldn't be a party without the odd classic House anthem thrown in for good measure. Jaydee's "Plastic Dreams" is dished up and consequently devoured by the maddening crowd of 20/30 somethings. Cargo aptly drops his own recent remix of Rozalla's "Everybody's Free" to which the crowd go absolutely bonkers. The low-slung ceiling of this cavernous venue could get knocked through at any moment!

First impressions of the venue are that it's small, however upon further inspection I soon discover that it extends much further back, making way for lots of dark nooks and crannies for those more interested in spectating than participating. These onlookers are thin on the ground tonight though, as the infectious music makes everyone want to dance. You just can't help it!

The walls have been bedecked with Rise banners and sparkly cut-outs of the number "2" by way of adding an extra touch of birthday decoration. The sparkly theme has been taken to heart by most of the ladies here tonight as their look is most definitely glam. What's so refreshing though is that they are carrying it off without being pretentious. A rare feat in Belfast House club. Generally speaking the guys are carrying off a more casual look. Your "look" is irrelevant here tonight though. Having an absolute belter of a night is at the forefront of everyone's agenda!
In my opinion Rise has triumphantly ascended to the status of best god damn House night in Belfast! What the venue lacks in size and space it more than compensates with atmosphere and energy. Small is most definitely very, very beautiful.

Plus a wicked review in IDJ Magazine, which you can read in full below;

IDJ Review
Chris Cargo ‘Shift it’ Choo Choo (U.K)

Choo Choo is back with their old favourite Chris Cargo. Here he drops a progressive bomb witha cool old skool sondos-esq vocal.
The original is not really wet ting my whistle, but the flip;with remix duties courtesy of Sick Joke is the bomb!
Dirty Acid grooves, and crisp percussion compliment the deep vocal perfectly, and we’ re left with an anthem in the making, that ’s definitely at the front of my box!
4/5 Pilliavin and Zimbardo

15th Feb: IDJ Magazine Reviews "Warning"
Already receiving heavy support from Laurent Garnier for the original mix and from Annie Nightingale and Anthony Pappa, Cargo's "Warning" gets a favourable review in IDJ magazine this month.
Here's what they had too say.

Chris Cargo ‘Warning’ Slide (UK) SLID022
Second review of the month for Northern Irelands most prolific producer, Chris Cargo.
‘Warning’ is a tough, techy affair with menacing stabs that slice through the mix and carry the track along nicely. The breakdowns are as slick as they come, and when all said and done, it’s a very tight and polished track. On the flip, Slide head honcho Richard Fox showcases a funky electro interpretation. 3/5

23rd Jan: 'You R' gets review on Beatfactor

CHRIS CARGO "YOU R" Kumquat Tunes
Review by Paul Prior of Beatfactor.net

" With releases on Choo Choo, Mixmaster and Renaissance, Chris Cargo is a man with the pedigree for well produced releases. You R is his next offering, that sees Chris keeping to his now well established formula of deep progressive.

The "Original Mix" is a midset driven filler, for the straight progressive jocks out there. Looped with a minimal baseline it chugs along like a ford cadet with a half empty petrol tank, it might not get them to the floor, but it will keep them on it. The addition of a gapped vocal also steps it up in places.

The "Dub Mix" is the more interesting of the two for me. Although the baseline remains statically minimal , the addition of filtered acidy synths and a full vocal makes for avid listening. In addition, it almost teasingly grooves to breaks putting a smile on the face of even the most hardened clubber.

Its the Dub that does for me, a stable release from the man from Northern Ireland. "
